Keep me signed into Yahoo! Mail

I get some comments on this blog, now and again, saying that “I have to sign in every time I want to get to my mail, even though I’ve checked the box…” It’s not many of you, but enough that I thought I would take this opportunity to see if I can offer some suggestions on how to keep yourself signed into Yahoo! Mail for up to 2 weeks.

So if it’s your wish to remain logged into Yahoo! Mail for two weeks, but are having difficulty doing so, I’ve created a help page for you in the Yahoo Mail Help pages. You can read the detailed instructions here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/classic/account/account-20.html

Some of the instructions are a bit technical, so if you’re not technically inclined you might want to get your resident computer nerd to give you a hand. Here is the abriged version:

  1. Check the box “Keep me signed in” on the login page of Yahoo! Mail.
  2. Make sure you are using the correct URL/web address to access Yahoo! Mail.
  3. Check your account settings to make sure that you have your account set to keep you logged in for 2 weeks.
  4. Make sure that you have your Internet browser set to accept “cookies” from Yahoo.
  5. Make sure that your anti-virus/firewall software isn’t blocking or deleting you Yahoo! cookies.

After confirming those five steps you should now be kept logged in for 2 weeks at a time. Remember – DO NOT do this if you use a computer in an Internet Café, or you share your computer with someone else. Finally, I know this is a pretty technical post, so I apologize if some of the instructions above seem fairly complicated.

Happy emailing.
Andrew - Yahoo! Mail Team

Under toolbar options. there is a further option to show an alert on my mail button when I have new yahoo mail. If I check the appropriate box and then exit, I expect that the next yahoo incoming mail will be indicated by my mail button. BUT IT DOESN`T HAPPEN. If I then re enter toolbar options I find that the check mark is no longer in place. Am I doing something wrong, or in other words “How do I get mail notification.”?
    Regards John Elliott

    Hi Elliott,
I’ve raised your issue with the Yahoo Toolbar team. One suggestion that I have is make sure you are signed into Yahoo when updating the toolbar options. Also, I’ve posted about how to get email notification before. You can read the post here: http://ymailuk.com/blog1/2008/02/15/get-email-alerts-on-your-desktop/
It requires that you install the Yahoo! Widget Engine, but I use it along with other widgets, and find it very useful.
    Hope that helps,

Where has “COMPOSE” gone ?? I wanted to send a message to a friend but there was no Compose.
Please can you help. Thank you

    Hi Charles,
I the button that your looking for is called “New” and it lives just above the list of all the folders on the left column of your Inbox. Because you use the all-new Yahoo Mail, you can also just type the letter “n” to open up a new mail message.
    Hope that helps,

Thanks for the FREE but GREAT service.

Sometimes, when I select “Mark Unread” for an email that’s already opened, an error (something like: “No mail is selected”) occurs. It seems to me that the system is trying to mark the message selected in the list of messages as unread instead of the message I am currently reading. I’ll appreciate if this is fixed.

Also, I have images automatically blocked but sometimes, the button to unblock the image does not show up when I open up an email and I have to reopen the email before it shows up - although it works better than it did before. Please fix this too.

    Thanks again.

Hi, I’ve filed error reports for this a few times, but never heard anything back. In the new Yahoo Mail, if I receive an email with multiple attachments, and then try to forward that email, I always get an error message. I have to switch to classic in order to forward it.

I just switched to the beta version of yahoo mail, and find that when I sort my messages by sender (or by ‘to’ in the ’sent’ folder), all messages by one sender (or sent by me to one person) don’t appear sorted by date but seem to be in a random order. This is unpractical when trying to find a specific message. Can you help? Thanks!

Some time earlier, I sent a message regarding how to have more than one family member with their own Yahoo email address, on the same computer.
I seem to have lost the message, although it did show that it was being moderated.
I am sure it was me who did something incorrectly, but I don’t know what.
    Regards, Albert.

    Hi Albert,
If you want to log two different people into Yahoo Mail on the same computer, you will have to use two different browsers. For example USER1@yahoo.co.uk should use Internet Explorer / USER2@yahoo.co.uk can login using the Firefox browser. That’s the only way I know where you can login with two different accounts on the same computer at the same time.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Andrew

I am having difficulty using Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser, when using Yahoo Mail. Firefox encounters an unexpected problem and closes Yahoo Mail. It sometimes does this only after an hour or so on Yahoo Mail, but on other occasions it does it after a minute or less.
Going into Yahoo Mail via Internet Explorer is less problematic although sometimes I have to use Classic mail as it won’t let me into standard mail.
Any suggestions? I would rather use Firefox if I can but at present rarely do so.

I am reconsidering paying for Yahoo services as you do not provide SSL for my email and such what. Google do, why don’t you? My email is in the clear, why do you not secure my communications?

I have reverted to using YAHOO MAIL under Mozilla Firefox, after a disastrous encounter thro’ OUTLOOK EXPRESS, to whom I was recommended. WILL NOT be using OUTLOOK EXPRESS for the problems they caused me, again.
    Does this answer your questions?
