Yahoo! Mail goes to infinity and beyond
March 28th, 2007
As Yahoo! Mail approaches its 10-year anniversary, I’m the lucky one who gets to announce that we will begin offering everyone unlimited email storage starting in May 2007. To mark the occasion, I checked in with David Nakayama, our group vice president of engineering, for some perspective on this milestone. In case that name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the developer of RocketMail, one of the world’s first webmail products, which Yahoo! acquired and relaunched as Yahoo! Mail in 1997.
Dave reminisced: “I remember getting in a room to plan our RocketMail launch over a decade ago and worrying that our original plan of a 2MB quota wasn’t enough, and that we needed to be radical and DOUBLE the storage to 4MB per account! It’s ironic that I routinely send and receive individual mail attachments bigger than that now. Our total capacity for mail accounts back then was 200GB for all of our customers. At Yahoo!, we’re now receiving more inbound mail than that every 10 minutes.”
When Yahoo! Mail launched 10 years ago, users got a whopping 4MB of storage for their entire mailbox. Today, you would fill that up with a single picture from your weekend.
This got me thinking about how the storage capacity of other popular technology products has changed. A quick snapshot:
- 1997: Yahoo! Mail launches with 4MB of storage
- SanDisk introduces 2MB flash card for the Canon PowerShot.
- Compaq announces “high capacity memory upgrades” in four capacities, including 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB capacities.
- Caleb introduces the Ultra High Density floppy disk drive that stores up to 144MB on a single disk.
- The first iPod is still a gleam in someone’s eye. It isn’t introduced until 2001 and comes with 5GB of storage.
- 2004/2005: Yahoo! Mail upgrades in 2004 to 100MB of storage, followed by a jump to 1GB in 2005
- Olympus upgrades to 1GB flash memory card.
- HP announces a 160GB storage upgrade for its Media Center PCs.
- Corsair in 2005 announces a USB flash drive with 4GB of storage.
- Apple announces the Fifth Generation iPod with 30GB capacity, and launches the newest 80GB iPod, which holds up to 100 hours of video, in 2006.
- 2007: Yahoo! Mail announces Unlimited Email Storage
- SanDisk launches 8GB flash card for photo storage
- Alienware introduces a desktop computer with 1 terabyte of storage
We’re psyched to be breaking new ground in the digital storage frontier by giving our users the freedom to never worry about deleting old messages again. And like any responsible webmail service, we have anti-abuse limits in place to protect our users. BTW: As much as we’d like to just flip a switch and “unlimit” everyone on the same day, we’ll be rolling this out over a few months to ensure a smooth transition — we know there’s virtually nothing more precious than your inbox.
We hope we’re setting a precedent for the future. Someday, can you imagine a hard drive that you can never fill? Never having to empty your photo card on your camera to get space back? Enough storage to fit the world’s music, and then some, on your iPod? Sounds like a future without limits.
Beats a slice of birthday cake, eh?

Hi, think its great that Yahoo! is the firdt to offer unlimited storage. Frankly, i’ve been thinking of a way to save my precious mails cos my storage space was becoming inadequate. Thanks Yahoo! for saving the day. I also think that Yahoo! mail beta is awesome!!
Good work guys
2. Keith | May 7th, 2007 at 12:26 am
That is simply wonderful. Perhaps it is time that I make a complete switch to use Yahoo! Mail. Great work to make it unlimited.
3. Patrick | May 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 am
Hope we get it soon now. I have Yahoo Plus and than I don’t have to use any other e-mail address. Unlimited storage - a dream come true!!!
4. minutz3 | May 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
I’d still love to have a slice of that birthday cake!
5. minutz3 | May 23rd, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Oh, and some way of storing all the “raw” material in my e-mails, so I could have a back-up of just the text in all e-mail messages on my computer, like Google Desktop does with Gmail.
Hi Minutz3,
Well, you can do that if you want. To do it, however, you will have to download your mail via POP, which you can do for free as a European user. After downloading your messages via a mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird, then you’ll be able to search via your desktop search client. I see that you have a @yahoo.se account. Take a look at the help pages here:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/se/mail/pop/
All UK users can do this too. Just change se to uk in the URL above to find out more.
Thanks,
Andrew

8. Alistair | June 1st, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Its a great way to pay your customers back for using your service for so many years. Also whilst we are on Yahoo and not another search engine we can view the advertisements and so create profits for you enabling yahoo to keep functioning. Utopia for users thanks for the upgrade although I only ever used 1 percent of the one gig. Still its the thought that counts.
9. Glen | June 1st, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Good job. And Cheers.
10. lljwagg | June 1st, 2007 at 2:56 pm
…and to think I was about to seek another e-mail account with bigger storage options….glad I didn’t.

Yahoo still has the best and most easily understood layout.
Best of all - when I send mail - it gets there!
Yahoo e-mail just cannot be beaten.

Splendid an dbravo to Yahoo. You have been very instrumental in making live much meaningful and easire for many poor people in Africa who would not have had access to faster and cheaper communication.
You are a bright star and as you celebrate a decade of excellence, we promise our commitment and loyalty to you and the entire team.

Yahoo, you are simply the best. I wouldn’t trade you for all the hotmails, gmails and hi5s out there. You just stay leagues ahead when hotmail just decided to insult its users with 2GBs of space.
18. Glen | June 1st, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Congratulations Yahoo and John Kremer, you are the lucky one who got to announce that Yahoo is offering everyone unlimited email storage from May 2007, but we are the luckier ones who are able to use this technological breakthrough.
Thanks a million times - and another million times over, and over and over and over - what lovely space there is now !!!
I wonder what I can fill it up with - wait a moment - I can’t fill it up !! ever !!
At last I can throw away my suitcase collection of 3.5″ floppy discs !!
A quick question though, How do you get to infinity and then beyond?
“Yahoo! Mail goes to infinity and beyond”
Ah! that’s a good one !!

Thank you very much for introducing this product. I have been using your storage for nearly five years and I was contemplating deleting some of the messages but with your new offer I dont have to worry about deleting any more. Sometimes even the most mundane messages can come in handy and therefore should not be deleted.
THANK YOU AGAIN

31. chris | June 2nd, 2007 at 6:44 pm
I reckon its too little too late.. for me at least. Ive got my new gmail address and after years of using Yahoo I have begun switching over. Also the POP3 that google offers is great, whereas Yahoo charge for this (which I did pay for a year). I just get the feeling that Yahoo will never innovate, they wont do anything new unless its to keep up with market trends. Also, I really dislike the new mail. For some reason its more of a chore to read than the older way.
32. Daniel O Kwabi | June 2nd, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Dear Yahoo, Thank you so much for giving all you faithful cuatomers unlimited mail storage. It is a great relief for I was wondwering how to increase my sorage capacity. Already I have deleted many important emails to make room for new ones. We are all happy and wish Yahoo all the best in future developments!!
Daniel

Though I have been telling my friends about it, I still can’t believe it. From now on, I won’t have to worry about my many photos and attachments jamming my inbox. Many of my flash drives will have to be tucked away for good. Thank you Yahoo for your wonderful service and care. You’ll always be ‘FIRST’.
34. Senik | June 2nd, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Thank you ! ! !
I think you will have more users
If you will make a Yahoo chat in Yahoo Mail, like Google Mail did.

Hi Senik,
Yahoo Chat in mail is coming soon. I’ve even posted a blog entry about it. You can read it here:
http://ymailuk.com/blog1/2007/02/20/chatterbox-inbox/
Chat functionality in Yahoo! Mail Beta is rolling out to UK users over the next few weeks, so if you don’t have the chat function yet, it will be there soon.
Thanks,
Andrew - Yahoo! Mail Beta Team

If you’re now offering infinite storage why are you wtill trying to bill me for a Yahoo plus subscription for extra storage space? And why doesn’t your customer services department respond when I email them to ask them the same question?

165. Aidan Work | June 9th, 2007 at 9:41 am
I am really blown away by getting the unlimited storage,as having 1GB of storage was going to be inadequate for my needs.I do have one question to ask.Is there going to be an unlimited number of unwanted email addresses that we can put onto our block lists,on the grounds that these addresses are where the spam emails are originating from? I’m really fed up with those spammers who try to peddle their pharmaceutical drugs, penis enlargements, fake computer software,& all sorts of scam emails. If there is going to be an unlimited number of email addresses that we can block, that would be a really great thing, especially in the fight against spam.
By the way, keep up the good work,& you will really go far.
166. Najeeb | June 9th, 2007 at 10:19 am

176. Indranee Buldawoo | June 9th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Thanks
I think it is a good thing to have an unlimited storage capacity as many people tend to check their email as and when. They usually delete those unnecessary/unrequired emails after a quite long period of time after working for example, huge documents which they receive in their mail box. So better take advantage of what yahoo mail is offering to us all.
Indranee
177. Nigel | June 9th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

Excellent, forward thinking.
Unlimited storage is a brilliant innovation.
However; If incorrectly addressed emails were not let through, then
my storage would not be as heavy.
My query: How does an email to: ablawaosifeso@yahoo.co.uk. manage to get on my computer, at all ?.

242. Chris Jackson | June 11th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
This is a step in the right direction. The next natural progression is to allow larger emails to be received - at the very least to allow the same size to be received as can be attached to a Yahoo email. It can be very frustrating to upload a large attachment on a slow upload connection only for it to be rejected by another Yahoo account…

Thank you,At last all those old star trek series i watched as a kid is getting nearer, hee hee i worked at leeds polytechnic computer dept in 1986,we had a room with every pc of its time there to teach business’s from the apple touch screen to i.b.m . It’s taken a while to get here today and convince some people of the future, but hey, look at it now, So a BIG WELL DONE as it is a pain in the arse to think i’ve had to wipe loads of important messages etc to make room for the new ones i receive today, unless i got my nice personnel to put it in my massive diary i’ve had to keep, plus all the trees we are saving too hee hee, thank u , a good customer. england uk

This is the best idea that an E-mail provider has come up with, got any more great ideas in the pipeline?
Although, is it possible to improve on perfection? I’d like to know how Yahoo can do this, but nobody else seems able to provide this type of facility.
Keep up the good work guys and girls and thanks a bunch.

291. LINDA PLANT | June 13th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Not being in the first flush of youth, its important to keep and reflect on past messages (one reason being, the old brainbox does not remember the way it once did) so its marvellous to have unlimited storage - a bit like a photographic album that one can look back and refer to.
Excellent idea

[...] To celebrate unlimited storage here in the Yahoo! offices we brought in some big (and I mean big) food stuffs. Who doesn’t like a cheese wedge that’s almost 5 feet tall? I’ve snapped some pics and uploaded to Flickr – our favorite photo sharing site. You can see all the pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ymail_uk_team/. [...]

As you now have given the world unlimited storage, and all European customers can get POP3 access for free, will you be canceling the fee that the Mail-plus users are paying?
Unless you can show me a really good reason for keeping the fee …..
—-
Hi Mark,
For less than £1/month you get the following benefits with Mail Plus:
- Increased spam and virus protection for your inbox
- No graphical ads
- No account expiration
- Archiving to back up your entire mailbox
- Send and receive messages up to 20MB (twice that of free offering)
- Personalise your email using a wide variety of backgrounds
But of course the choice is up to you.
Thanks for your comment.
Andrew - Yahoo! Mail Beta Team

Dear yahoo Team, i have been with yahoo webmail now for aproximately 5 years now and have always found yahoo to be a very reliable web based email program, 10 / 10 for the unlimited storage you’ve brought out for us all who use yahoo mail, I did read with quite a lot of surprise and may i say dismay at the coments made by someone called chris in the coments page listings, so much so that i had to copy and paste the thing he said about our invaluable yahoo as fatr as i’m concerend here is the copy and paste of what he said !.

If this customer who seems to like pulling yahoo to bits isn’t satisfied with yahoo mail, then he can always go to some other email client who at the end of the day will either not be as reliable as yahoo, or after a short spell of another email client be having no end of problems !. good luck to him and good riddens !.
Keep the good work up our dear yahoo Team Leaders !. Onward yahoo Onward.

I started using Yahoo e-mail in February 2003. Back then the storage was quite small. I couldn’t get much on my e-mail then. One day I got an e-mail from Yahoo saying that my storage space has bee extended and that sent items will not use the storage space up.
I will use Yahoo as long as it is running, which should be forerver.
The only thing I think isn’t good, is that you’re only allowed to attach things which goes up to 10mb. Sometimes it isn’t enough for me.
Good work Yahoo. Keep it up!! The best ever e-mail account.
